Why Solar Heat Pump Heater
Solar
hot water comes in two forms, but both methods use the heat of the
sun’s rays to give you the hot water you need for bathing, washing the
dishes and washing your laundry in warm water. The most widely used
method consists of a set of pipes (usually in a sort of black glassy
panel) that is installed on a north-facing roof as close as possible to
your hot water tank. This method often also uses evacuated tubes to
help the water in the pipe heat up and to stay hot via insulation.
Sometimes, these solar hot water systems have a gas/electricity-boost,
which means that even on the cloudiest, coldest day of a Melbourne
winter, you will have all the hot water you need.
The second method uses heat pump technology.
The heat pump will take the heat out of your house (where you don’t
want it) or elsewhere, and will transfer it into the water. And as the
excess heat in your house or in the atmosphere is heated by the sun,
this is indeed a form of solar hot water. Where it is not possible
to drill in a ground probe or install a surface ground loop on the
property, an air source heat pump may well be the answer. The only
space requirement is an outside wall making them ideal for apartments
and homes with limited outside space. With no need for groundworks,
installation costs are kept to a minimum.
Air
source heat pumps work by converting the energy of the outside air into
heat, creating a comfortable temperature inside the house as well as
supplying energy for the hot water system. As with all heat pumps, air
source models are most efficient when supplying low temperature systems
such as underfloor heating.
